Q & A with John Walkenbach, author of Excel 2013 Bible John Walkenbach How long have you been using Excel? My first spreadsheet experience was using VisiCalc, running on an Apple II computer owned by my employer. I eventually saved up and bought my own IBM-PC, and started using Lotus 1-2-3. At some point, probably around 1988, I tried out Excel, which included a run-time version of Windows. I thought the graphic user interface was just a gimmick, and I much preferred 1-2-3. But by Version 4 (released in 1992), I was hooked on Excel, and preferred it to the competitors. So, to answer your question . . . about 25 years. How has Excel changed the way people do business? Among other ways, it puts data in the hands of users, and makes it easy to slice and dice information. People can run their own ad-hoc reports, and not have to rely on others to provide information. Any advice for new Excel users? Be curious and don't be afraid to experiment. The Ribbon has hundreds of commands, and it's worth the time to dig around and see what they do. If you find something that seems useful, just work with it until you understand how it works. And, master the art of searching the web. There are countless Excel questions that have already been asked and answered. What is your favorite Excel 2013 feature? Well, my favorite Excel feature, by far, is pivot tables. But if you're asking about features new to Excel 2013, it would have to be Flash Fill. It uses pattern recognition to transform a column of data (no formulas required). For example, you can use Flash Fill to extract last names from a column of names. It also works in the opposite direction, so you can combine multiple columns using Flash Fill. It’s not perfect, and it sometimes fails to identify some patterns so you need to check the results carefully. But, I expect to see this feature improved in future versions. What do you like most about writing about Excel? It's when I first install the beta of a new version. It's always fun to see what's new and different. And, of course, I like the fact that I get very long vacations in between revisions. What is your all-time best Excel tip? It's impossible to come up with one, but if forced to reply, I'd have to say it's the multi-cell array formula that I developed. This formula is entered into a 6-row x 7-column range of cells and displays a monthly calendar. The formula uses a cell that contains a date and updates when that date cell is changed. What can you do with Excel that might surprise people? You can actually earn a living by writing about it! But seriously, Excel is such a flexible product, there is almost no limit to what it can do. Even I'm surprised by some of the things I see. For example, I've seen some amazing games that run in Excel. And I've also seen some charts that I would have thought to be impossible. As the saying goes, it's limited only by your creativity--and there are some very creative Excel users out there.

My husband had to buy this book for a graduate class. He likes buying as many books for school on his kindle BC they are cheaper and not as much to carry around.

Book has a lot of good info but there is a trick to using much of it, especially the short cuts, and the author DOES NOT give the tricks that lead to correct usage. Clicking the shortcuts as prescribed in this book often leads to unintended results, leaving the user wondering what they did wrong to get there.I expected more and better judging by the author's reputation and the reviews. Not blown away at all. Even though the coverage of Excel seems very complete I can't rate as excellent or even 3 stars simply because just following the instructions DOES NOT always lead to correct results. The author leaves too much out. Or maybe he's been using Excel so long and is so good at it that he doesn't remember what it's like to be a novice or barely medium-skilled user.Buyer beware.

Excel 2013 BibleI got this for a VBA coding class a couple years ago and let me tell you that both this and the Excel 2013 Power Programming with VBA, link below, saved my grade that semester. It really helped me understand how to use VBA for various applications and went through step by step on how to code. I am not a coder and by the end of the semester I was writing hundreds of lines of code for not only the class but for my own personal use. Would absolutely recommend for any novice in excel VBA.Excel Power ProgrammingExcel 2013 Power Programming with VBAI am part of the Amazon Associates Program

This book is excellent. It is written for a beginner or an advanced user in easy to understand language! I am an advanced user and bought this to sharpen my skills and it is well worth the purchase. I am skimming through the basics and learning some new techniques that will save me time at my job as well reading about more complicated features that will greatly reduce my workload. Everything that I want to know is included in the book. I have several Excel books from different authors and this is the book that I will keep handy for quick reference as well as reading in detail. I highly recommend this book!

If you've never read an Excel book by John Walkenbach, then you don't know how to really use Excel. This is the second Excel Bible of his I've read, first was the 2007 version, and I've also read his 2013 Power Programming in VBA and his Formulas book. By the time you get to Chapter 3 in this book, you'll be better at Excel that 90% of the people around you. Excel is a powerful tool, and this book shows you how to get the most out of Excel. It's more than just a great application to make todo lists.

It's got nearly everything you ever wanted to know about Excel 2013. I'm sure I won't use 90% of it, but it's really helpful for the other 10%. I have used Excel for many years, and even took a couple of classes. I can make neat charts of several kinds. But when faced with using it to track my own family's finances, my knowledge was truly lacking. So I read lots of reviews and bought this book. So far, so good.

Besides a few errors and a couple of sections Mr. Walkenbach took the long way around, this book is definitely a needed tool on anybody's shelf who frequently uses the excel. I notice myself grabbing it for reference when using VBA code I don't typically use or when I want to help a coworker find the solution to something I haven't dealt with in a while.

The Excel 2013 Bible is an excellent resource for the latest version of Excel. All aspects of the software are covered including the new features of the 2013 version. I recommned it to all beggining and intermediate users of MS Excel.

This text is a wonderful resource!! I was taking an online class for excel and I hit a wall once the topic turned to PivotCharts and PivotTables. Fortunately, this book helped explain the purpose of pivotcharts/pivottables very well. The Excel Bible has great examples and step by step guides of how to accomplish tasks in excel. I recommend this book especially if you are at an intermediate level of excel.
