I really wanted to like this cookbook as I love Lisa’s other two books, but unfortunately this one is a total disappointment. Her “budget” isn’t really practical for most people hoping to reduce their grocery budget. For instance, her recipe for sheet pan Brussels sprouts and potatoes comes in at $12.27 just for a side dish. She recommends serving it with simple seafood from her first book. It doesn’t include the cost but I’m sure that’s would come in at over $20 for the whole meal. Her breakfast smoothie bowl has a cost of $3.46 per serving. So choosing just those two meals for a family of four would cost almost $35 and we haven’t eaten lunch. Another recipe for simple walnut crusted salmon costs $15.87. This is just for the main dish. Most people cooking on a budget can’t really afford wild caught salmon at $10 per pound. And then you still have to add side dishes. She also recommends growing your own fresh herbs which is great in theory but in the winter, you would still have to buy them, adding significantly to the cost. Unfortunately I think this book is really out of touch with cooking on a budget.

I have been a fan of Lisa's for awhile now. I have ordered numerous copies of her books for myself and to give to friends. This one is perhaps my very favorite. Every single recipe we've tried has been fantastic. I'm looking through the book while I write this.Favorite breakfast: Budget Granola. Just so, so good. I'm never buying granola again.Favorite lunches for kids and adults: Pimento Mac and Cheese (I can't stop raving about this one!) and Deconstructed Spring Roll Bowls. Favorite side/salad: Zucchini and Feta Fritters.Favorite snack/appetizer: Easy Pickle Dip (SO addictive!).Too many favorite dinners to name all of them, but my kids went bananas over the "Fast-Food" Chicken Nuggets and the Quick and Easy Fried Rice is my new go-to.And there's a chapter on Slow Cooker recipes. SO helpful. I use my slow cooker several times a week and I've loved the Cuban Pork and the chicken recipes we've tried so far. We've tried a few of the desserts and decided the Blueberry Lemon Cheesecake is probably the best cheesecake recipe we've ever tried. I've made all of the recipes from the Homemade Staples chapter and the The Best-Ever Steak Butter really IS the best. I've been making big batches of it and keeping it my freezer - not just for steaks! It's great on veggies too.Lisa has a knack for salad dressings. I will never buy store-bought dressings again. Between the three books, all of the bases are covered.Besides the great recipes, I've really appreciate the time and effort that's gone into the budget stuff as well as labeling the recipes for food preferences and allergies. I'm a very visual person and I love the way the book is laid out and the charts and diagrams included. Like I said, this is my favorite of all three - all of which I love and use on a regular basis.

I was so excited to hear about a budget approach to clean eating. Great comparison of grocery stores and specific items so you know where to go to buy ingredients for the recipes. Unfortunately, I dont have access or time to bulk buy and go to many different stores to keep my price down. Very inspirational though. I need to learn to cut out other things to afford the ingredients at one store shop.

I have all of Lisa's cookbooks and this one might be my favorite! I got it three days ago and have made 3 recipes so far and loved all of them. Even my extremely picky kids and husband have enjoyed the recipes! Fast food chicken nuggets and apple pie french toast have been my favorites so far but I plan to cook many more recipes soon! I love that there is a slow cooker section in the cookbook since I am a busy mom to three kids!

As someone who has dealt with being able to buy enough food for my family in the past I feel qualified to gauge whether this book understands extremely tight food budget needs. Many other books/articles that claim to understand poverty and food purchasing but then suggest items that no truly strict budget would even consider. This book is full of recipes and ideas that genuinely fit very restrictive budgets. The first week I used it I made 3 recipes and even though one was a salad none of it negatively impacted my purchasing. It is now my go-to book for eating real food without overspending

I anxiously awaited this cookbook’s arrival and preordered it last November when I first heard about it. I have followed the 100daysofrealfood blog since long before there was a first book and have been impressed with the previous two books. This 3rd one from Lisa really hits it out of the park visually the way each recipe’s budget is laid out (along with a color photo and shopping list) in a clearly organized manner. Multiple dietary accommodations are shown on the recipes (ie: gluten-free, dairy-free, nut-free, etc.) as well as in a convenient table in the back of the book for handy reference. The dinner plans, supermarket comparison prices (some may surprise you) and packed lunch ideas for kids and adults all provide valuable time and money saving information for those seeking to use real foods in their kitchen. On top of all of these positive attributes, the recipes themselves use accessible ingredients and are not complicated. Lisa’s own children contributed recipes that look delicious and should encourage members of all ages in families to cook real food!

I’ve made 6 recipes so far and my family has loved everyone of them, which is saying a lot as I have two picky (and hungry) middle school boys. I’ve made the cheesecake recipe twice and have had rave reviews each time. The best part about her recipes is that they are not overly complicated, the directions are laid out well and it makes it easy to follow. I can’t wait to see what recipes she comes up with in her next cookbook!
