Easy to get lost in the Florida Keys in this fictional tale of a threesome that bungles a Navy plane landing in 1962 that comes back to bite them fifty years later. Two nuclear bombs are accidentally jettisoned into the ocean in the Keys by a pilot and the coverup is executed by the only other two at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Today the pilot, Ward, is the Vice President in the midst of his own presidential run, and days away from election day. Of the two on the ground that discovered the screw up and covered it up, Gillum is now the commander of the nearby Naval base, and Woodson is retired and living in seclusion on one of the islands. Mac Travis, while diving and working his traps, finds one of the two bombs. He and a helper raise bomb onto his boat and take it to Woodson to identify it. This begins a series of side stories as the helper gets drunk and tells the information at a local bar. Woodson wants to derail the presidential campaign as unfit to serve, Gillum wants to kill the story along with all witnesses and recover both bombs, a heavily indebted drug seller wants to use the bomb to buy his way out of trouble with his suppliers, the suppliers want to obtain the bomb for their own use and Travis wants to bring up the other bomb before some unsuspecting tourist accidentally sets it off. Definitely makes you look forward to reading on in the series
I downloaded this book for free, not aware that it would be only half of the story. Very disappointed to get through 80% of the story and finding out I have to purchase the end of the story in Book 2. I may not be able to finish this intesting story. I gave this a 4 rating because the story is interesting.Linda
I have enjoyed both "Wood's books" I find them to be light reading with adventure wrapped into a busy plot. Becker seems quit well informed about the Keys and while the "drama" is there it does make one want to visit the Keys. The life there appears to be a lot less hectic and away from the world. That being said the mystery also is fun, a lot like the Dirk Pitt books without the endless pages of detail that I have found boring. The "Numa" and "Game of Thrones" series seem to be paid by the number of pages while Becker's books just want to tell a story and I like that.Bob H
The telling of an alleged historical event that leads to a race against time to bring three different groups of people to converge in one spot to save the world before disastrous events transpire. Espionage, traitors, terrorists and the shaky good guys all do their part to bring it to an explosive conclusion.
What goes around comes around. I used to scuba and snorkel and I never saw anything like that!!! I found myself holding my breath many times as I read this. I’m glad that I have both a good pulmonologist and cardiologist. I don’t think that I would have made it to the end without their help. Despite that, I enjoyed the story and highly recommend it to those with both a strong heart and strong lungs.
This is my first book of Steven Becker. I liked it so much, I now have the second book. Mr. Becker's writing is very refreshing and his story line is a little different than most of the writers I read. Being in the Navy and stationed at Key West along with being a big time boater this story was very interesting, It brought back memories of living and boating in the keys.
This is a great read if you are a lover of Florida fiction, like I am. This is filled with shady, marginal characters trying to work an angle. There are enough plot twists so you don't know until the end how it was all going to work out. This is the first Becker book I have read, and I'm looking forward to reading the others!
I really enjoyed this book. It was easy to get into and hard to put down. The scuba chapters were fairly accurate (but getting twenty minutes on a 30 cf pony with 400 psi seems stretching it just a bit :) The only reason the book gets a four, are the many typos. The author really needs to get a good proof reader.
