Review

"Not since the very practical and church-focused curriculum theory and design manuals produced by those who gave leadership to the Cooperative Curriculum Project (1960-64), along with some of their protégées, has a book been more warranted. This book merits association with several of those publications (See Campbell Wyckoff, 1961, Theory and design of Christian education, Philadelphia, PA: Westminster Press; or Maria Harris, 1989, Fashion me a people, Louisville, KY: Presbyterian Publishing; or Howard Colson and Raymond Rigdon, 1969, Understanding your church's curriculum, Nashville, TN: Broadman Press). ...Using the metaphor of cartography, or mapmaking, Estep, White, and Estep have given us a fresh and practical approach to developing curriculum." --Christian Education Journal

the book gives a lot of comprehensive knowledge about educational theology lenses and also has also deonstrated christ centredness. On the other hands sone of content are derived from western perspective that might not be best suited asian context.

I am reading for a seminary class. If you have an education background the book is great. Those without an education background will have to learn a lot of terms.

Current, biblical, and comprehensive. As Lead Pastor in a SBC church, I found this text extremely applicable and practical to my current ministry.

While the book contains relevant and accurate information, the writing is hard to follow. Because of the multiple writers, there are often redundancies and times when information is explained several chapters after it was first introduced. The sources are solid and helpful. The authors use good quotes but don't explain them well. Overall, the book is good if you want to go wading through the quotes but frustrating otherwise.

As the years go by many things in a church will change, pastors come and go as do the officers in the church, yet something rarely ever changes, the curriculum a local church uses. This statement is a sad reality of most of our local churches. We seek to evaluate those who are on staff, or volunteer as teachers and Bible Study leaders, yet those in leadership never seem to take the time and effort it takes to evaluate what is taught to the laity in all ministries of the church. As a minister in charge of the christian education of a local church I have had this exact task put on my plate, it is not a easy task I can assure you, but it is not one which is impossible. In the past I had the displeasure of creating my own grid to evaluate the current christian education curriculum for all demographics, which never seemed to work like it was suppose to. Thankfully B&H Publications has produced a work which has been an answer to my prayers. Mapping Out Curriculum in Your Church: Cartography for Christian Pilgrims, Edited by James Estep, Karen Estep and Roger White, is a book which seeks to give aid to ministers and committees who are evaluating and possibly changing from their current curriculum. While you may or may not have Baptist leanings this work while produced by B&H does not only suggest baptist curriculum, on the contrary curriculum produced by B&H is just listed align side others. The reason for position is that the book is focused on giving the minister and/or committee a strategic plan of action to evaluate their needs and desires. It is refreshing to have a work which this is the primary focuses, without constantly seeing propaganda for the publisher’s own line of products. Furthermore each chapter has review questions that would help any committee who would like to use this book as a guide in changing their curriculum needs base on their theology. I therefore recommend this work as an ineradicable asset to all who see to diligently evaluate their current and possibly future curriculum for their ministries. This book was provided to me free of charge from B&H Academic in exchange for an unbiased, honest review.

Mapping out Curriculum in Your Church is actually composed by a team of three authors: James and Karen Estep and Roger White. Each of these authors comes with their own unique skillsets, but even with their various writing styles, their work flows together cohesively. James and Karen are from Lincoln, IL, where James is a professor of Christian Education and Karen is an associate professor of Teacher Education at Lincoln Christian University. Roger, who is from Azusa, CA, is a professor in the Graduate Ministries and University Libraries departments at Azusa Pacific University. Based on their individual experiences in the Christian education world, each author was able to bring forth his or her own perspective in creating this book. Through the use of metaphorical language, James and Karen Estep and Roger White relate the need for curriculum in ministry to the need for a map in traveling. The idea for this book took shape when the authors met at the North American Professors of Christian Education conference in 2009 where they bonded over a shared passion for curriculum in the church. They feel strongly about having good, solid curriculum available for all levels in ministry because without it, leaders will get lost and start wandering, similar to how one would get lost and start wandering without a map. This book is sectioned off into four portions. The first being the first chapter. In this first chapter, the reader will discover why curriculum is so important for the church and why it must continue to be developed. Section 2, chapters 2-5, provides the reader with information regarding how curriculum is designed. Each chapter of this section is dedicated to a particular perspective leading into curriculum. For example, chapter 3 is called “Orienting to True North: Biblical Perspectives on Curriculum.” The other chapters are on the theological and historical perspectives, as well as learning theories. It’s important for curriculum to match with a learning theory to ensure that the best learning is possible for the students. Through these four chapters, the reader will better understand the foundation of curriculum. In the third section, chapters 6-11, the authors move further into the actual design and development of curriculum. Here, they allow the reader to visualize things with a little more detail by focusing on specific objectives, purposes, and goals for a curriculum to have. The fourth and final section of this book contains chapters 12-16. To keep us on our toes, the Esteps and Dr. White brought in five new authors, one for each chapter. Throughout the course of the final section, each of the new authors addresses a particular kind of curriculum and walks the reader through the process of assessing said curriculum. For instance, chapter 12, written by Holly Allen from John Brown University, is about children’s ministry. Allen describes a theoretical scenario, one that can be easily applied to any church setting dealing with children’s ministry, and goes through the process of figuring out the best route to take. The same general process happens in the rest of the chapters as well, except applied to differing age groups. On the whole, I think the authors’ intentions for this book were very well thought-out. In addition to that, I agree with their premise that the church needs to be educated on its use of curriculum. They did a really good job organizing their content in a way that furthers that point. In order for anyone to be fully on board with an argument, he or she is most likely going to want to know why he or she should care, background information, how the content will be beneficial, etc. This book offers all the answers to those questions and more, and it is especially helpful because it goes in that logical order. One thing I personally would have liked is more information on the specific types of curriculum for different age groups. This is just a personal preference though because I am looking into young adult literature, so I understand that couldn’t be done in a book like this. One thing I would like to remember and take from this book is that curriculum is important in the life of a church. This might seem redundant and obvious, but for me, I find myself overlooking curriculum more times than not. There are times when I though that following curriculum was taking the “easy way out” by having someone else prepare lessons and subject content for you. But through this book, I learned that having curriculum is not the easy way out as I’d thought, but rather an essential tool every church leader should have. Curriculum offers direction, guidance, and cohesion within a church. More than that, when done right, it is a launching pad for leaders to use for the work of the Holy Spirit.
