I'm so captivated by the life and beautiful writing of this incredible man. I was listening to a podcast by Timothy Keller, he mentioned Howard Thurman so I looked him up on Kindle and found this autobiography. I read another reviewer say "I wish I could have known him..." That's exactly how I felt all the while reading this wonderful book. I'll be going back to read some of the passages that I've highlighted in order to savor the beautiful spirit that shines through the book. And I'm looking forward to reading lots more of his other writing. I highly recommend this book, if you're interested in the history of the spiritual experience of people who lived under the oppressive conditions of racism in the early 20th century. What a brilliant mind and powerfully radiant presence he brought to those who were fortunate enough to be influenced by him! I'm so grateful for the discovery of his books and I'm going to be reaping the benefits of the wisdom he's passed along through them.
It's hard to convey in words the impact potential of the words, thoughts and experiences expressed in this book. It is my first meeting with this author. Now I feel as if I was unknowingly waiting or longing to meet him. His insights and thoughts opened me up to my own.
Never having heard of Howard Thurman previously I was drawn to him after seeing a quote of his "When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with their flock, The work of Christmas begins: to find the lost, to heal the broken, to feed the hungry, to release the prisoner, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among brothers, to make music in the heart." On googling him I bought this book which is an account of a life lived against a background of recism and opporssion of Afro-Americans (negroes in his day). It is an inspiring book as we journey with him through a childhood where his grandmother (a former slave) raised him through to the journey to college and then academia before entering pastoral ministry at the first intentional multi-racial church estabished in USA. The trip to the Indian sub-continent was a watershed in his life as he met other dark skinned people fascinated at meeting a black American. His personal life and marriages and children reveal a man who was human yet prophetic in a time when colour mattered. His is an inspiring story. Am reading Jesus and the Disinherited and glad I read his bio first. It is a much better book.
This is a great book that I learned so much from. His life was always about Jesus. He was such a good man to use as a guide.
Howard Thurman is a treasure. His autobiography is enlightening, though I often wished for more names and details. But this is a must read for anyone who is interested in racial justice and American history.
This bok exposed me to new ways of understanding Christianity. Thurman is the most intelligent Christian that I have ever read or heard. When I read this book I tried to absorb his intelligence, his ability to comprehend the many levels and dimensions of the human heart, freedom of the darker race which in turn would liberate the Caucasians. Reading his words filled in the gap of my quest for understanding and answers about love, Christianity, and how Christian belief has the ability to unify people, lead to trust, community, acceptance, and respect without fear.
In becoming better acquainted, through reading, with a man some of my friends have encouraged me to become familiar with, I have found an incredible gift in the form of Hward Thurman, whose message is not only inspiring, but timely, interfaith, intercultural and, most of all one, thatif taken to heart and put into practice, could change the world. I often wonder why such messages are read, spoken from various platforms and then passed over and and remembered only as inspirational words as we forge ahead in the world doing things the same way over and over again.I recommend the message in this book to everyone who will care enough to not only learn about an incredible human being who was with us for a while, left us with a vision, and challenged us to see things in a new light. I invite us to see the wisdom he shared and put it into action.It is an autobiography and so we must accept it as written, staying free f rom judgement as to style, etc. It is a man's heart, gifted to those who will read and those whom he has influenced and those who could gain so much from sharing in the vision.
