First printed in 1765, Rogers Journals read like the Officer of the Day’s logbook: date, location, action, miles covered, key terrain, etc. It is straight fact, as perceived by Roger. Still it is a fascinating read that details the ebb and flow of the contest with the French in Upstate New York, New England, and Lower Canada. I was particularly taken by the difficulties in getting reimbursed for expenses advanced and the politics of introducing, expanding, and preserving a new form of unit with new tactics. The willingness of British commanding generals to embrace the need for rangers and request Rogers to train the light companies of British Army line regiments to use these tactics was particularly reassuring and debunks the American myth of nothing but pipe clay and red coats on line in the wilderness. The details of the occupation of French positions after the surrender of French Canada was very enlightening as were the relationships with the formerly French Indians. Rogers’ Standing Orders for his Rangers are as applicable to patrolling and indeed all military operations today as they were in the forests of North America 250 years ago. The hardiness of these people is amazing and earns the reader’s deepest respect. It is a worthwhile read, but it is not THE LAST of the MOHICANS.Conflicting Loyalties (Navy Gray Book 1)

This narration of an underreported era of American history is just such an example. This is particularly true in the latter stages of this book where the author leads the reader from 1761 era Detroit to Albany, NY. The French & Indian War is over and the Americans, fighting with the British, must make their way home - useful as a diary but not compelling.That said, the first 80% of the book is quite fascinating. I had not known that Army Rangers had existed at that stage of US history, and their exploits foreshadowed the Rangers of today.This was very difficult combat, and not at all like the stereotypical scenes of Redcoats arrayed in linear formation, but more similar to the asymmetric strategies of modern military action.

It was a pleasure and inlighting experience to hear from a man from the earlier history of our country, in his own words, how he was involved in the history of our country's making. Being from Illinois, I have a French history in my state, that isn't well understood, and why it ended & why. It also brings the importance of the Native Americans to our formation as an English Speaking Nation. It also showed the English, in a better light, in the saving of many of many of our lives in cities as well as on the farms. But mostly it introduces you to the real Americans, who came from all over the Colonies, to form Ranger Companies, and the requirements to qualify to be a Ranger. And this is done by nonother than the leader, that founded the Rangers, and their tactics, Clothing Requirements, Arms requirements, who furnished them, and their Job discription. It also described the hardships that were demanded of them, and their loses, injuries, and heroism. These were everyday citizens that fought for the safety of their neighbors, families, and the chance to build a promisingly future for all of us. This was done with the collaboration of the English Government, American families, and Friendly Native Americans. It was also a window into the life of an American Hero, that was called a traitor, during the American Revolution. The 1650's were a lot more important time in our history, than was given time in our School System, to the founding of our Country. This book also gives us discription as to where this history actually took place! To enjoy History, one has to explore!

As titled, this book is the journal of Major Rogers, the leader of the English Rangers during the French and Indian War. There is minimal feeling in the book as it is very terse and concise (a real journal). Unfortunately, the disastrous raid at St Francis received only a short mention. The journal was very interesting as he wrote about the various towns he went to (e.g. the small trading post at Toronto). I enjoyed this book as I like history and learned more about this war.

Great primary document. Covers the start of the 7 years war till just after Rogers' raid on a native camp behind French lines. Each chapter is a year of Rogers' journal. Bit sparse with details, but taken as a whole, it shows the intelligence, courage, and will of the British ranger corps.

This a very interesting, first hand, perspective of early colonial military life in the New World. One aspect was just staggering - the amount of miles they would cover on foot in the northern woods of New England. I also liked the accounts with native tribes. One has to take into consideration the time period when reading the thoughts and opinions of those early encounters. An easy and quick read as well as very informative for anyone interested in this area of history.

In Robert Roger's own words he describes his and other colonial's relationship with the autocratic Royal Regular Army. This British arrogance toward the colonial militias surely provided some of the under pinning reasons that brought on the American Revolution. The British could not stop being so British in their attitude toward their independent thinking and self governing colonial cousins. An interesting note I have not seen else where published about Robert Rogers, which while serving in the British Army during the Revolution on a spying expedition he discovered Nathan Hale was a spy, had him arrested and consequently hanged.

A very interesting read. In fact many of the more interesting characters of the Revolutionary War wrote Journals. Most are interesting as well if you are into Rev. war history.
