Rising StarBy: Susannah Nix5 out of 5 starsThe story Rising Star by Susannah Nix is a wonderful romance book that I loved reading. It not only has a wonderful storyline it also has two main characters that I grew to love with each chapter that I read. Alice Carlisle is a woman that is caring and intelligent. She is also about to lose the job that is paying her bills and having to find a new place to live, immediately. She has a wonderful personality and a good heart. She does have trust issues and at times believes herself to be broken. She finds herself saying yes when Griffin Beach asks her to dog sit for him after the dog sitter he hired bails on him. It is the answer to her current problems. Griffin Beach is trying to break out of TV and onto the big screen. He is not one that has had success with relationships in the past because he always puts his work first. These two both are attracted to each other. They both feel the pull between them. They both have feelings/emotions for each other. Will a relationship between them work? Will they get an HEA? Read this story to find out. Alice and Griffin are two characters that I found myself rooting for and wanted them to find happiness. I enjoyed reading about the bantering that went back and forth between them. The story is written in such a way that I felt the emotions of the characters and mine went up and down when theirs did. I also enjoyed reading about some of the additional characters that are introduced. I liked reading about the part that they play in the book and also their interactions with Alice and Griffin. Don’t miss out on an absolutely wonderful romance story that you won’t want to put down until you have finished the final page.
I fell in love with Susannah Nix’s work when I read REMEDIAL ROCKET SCIENCE, and her book of short stories, I & LOVE & YOU, sealed the deal for me.Nix’s latest book, RISING STAR, is another winner, and everything I hoped. Her characters are so deeply human. They struggle things most people have been consumed by at one point or another in their lives: with money or finding a place to live before their lease is up; they worry about jobs, and if they measure up. One of the most appealing things about the gorgeous, movie star hero, Griffin Beach, (whose last name is not actually Beach) was the miserable diet he’s stuck on, and the way he internalizes his anxiety about his career and the things he’s given up to keep it afloat. It reminded me, in a way of reading a biography of Cary Grant and that incredible quote: “Everybody wants to be Cary Grant. I want to be Cary Grant.â€The hero comes in a pretty package, and sure that’s helps, but it’s the pain and the longing of a real human being underneath that you fall in love with. It’s a brilliant book, with some truly fresh moments. Both Alice and Griffin face significant choices and challenges in their careers, and I loved the way Nix handled these without resorting to flashy, implausible sacrifices and victories. Unexpectedly, one of my favorite parts of the book (besides the delicious, swoon-inducing love scenes) turned out to be Alice’s Ph.D. advisor, and the advice she gives Alice about handling a sexual harassment complaint. I think her wise, compassionate words may be the part I remember longest.I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
There was so much I liked about this book but also aspects that drove me nuts. I love the way the harassment Alice endured was portrayed because it felt real. It was a less than convenient plot device and I appreciate that it is included and discussed because I know very few women who don’t have their own #metoo storyWhat drove me nuts is I didn’t feel like Alice or Griffin were real and that made me sad. I liked their story but there was some piece of storytelling magic missing. They were both a little too bland, too nice maybe. The book is a fine read and addresses some important issues. I like this author and love the careers she chooses for her heroines (as a sociology major, I really appreciate Alice’s job) but overall I give this book 3.5 stars.
I was given an ARC for an honest review of Rising Star. What can I say? Susannah Nix has done it again! She somehow manages to address prominent social issues with a very true-to-life approach, whether it's the challenges faced by women in STEM careers or sexual harassment. I like Griffin - a lot! He is beautiful but insecure, shallow but still caring, thoughtless but still thoughtful. You know, like a REAL guy, with real issues, not the typical alpha book hero. I REALLY like Alice - her personal/professional dilemma is a reality for many women. She is funny, heartwarming and REAL. Their romance was a slow burner, (my favorite kind!), but very sweet and realistic. I re-read this and loved it even more the 2nd time through.
Rising Star by Susannah Nix. This is an amazing book that kept me flipping pages way into the night. Its the story of Alice Carlisle who has been doing jobs in Hollywood as an extra on a hit soap opera. She had also been working on her dissertation for a Ph. D. Her Ph.D has been put on hold, her soap opera is ending so she will be out of work and her roommate is kicking her out so his boyfriend can move in. In other words her world is crumpling. Griffin is one of the up and coming Hollywood stars, good looking and on everyone's radar. His life is falling into place until his dog sitter bails on him for the summer. Becoming friendly with Alice, Griffin decides to ask her to dog/house sit for him during the summer. It will help them both out. She reluctantly accepts and soon she and Griffin are very close. Will she let go and trust him to see if they can make it work, will Griffin quit trying to please everyone but himself and give himself completely to Alice. This book was very sweet, romantic and full of comedy. I loved every minute of it.
I did enjoy this book, and appreciated how both characters stayed true to themselves. I've always enjoyed the author's writing style, and this book did not disappoint. My only complaint is that the ending felt rushed and left me feeling like the couple's main conflict was brushed over to get them back together before an arbitrary page limit was reached.
