If you struggle with being a Christian and being Black, this is the book for you. Be forewarned that it is heavy to digest, but it is worth it. The book gracefully brings together what Blackness means, and why it isn't anti-Jesus, but rather, in line with what Jesus represents. He does make claims that can stir some, but if you draw out the essence of what he is presenting, it allows you to reconcile your identities. I would recommend this book a thousand times.
James Cone’s initial foray into the intentional development of a black theology ought be required reading for any serious Christian theologian. It challenges long-standing Christian claims by challenging not so much the claims themselves, but the racist presuppositions to those claims. The language is contextual, I suspect, offensive to many. But the language is effective in illuminating the racist presuppositions. Read with a critical eye, one can indeed find under-developed theological claims that could bear sharpened revision. But as with any first revolutionary theological work, the brilliance lies in the courageous and compelling insight that demands personal reflection and dare I say ... theological modification.
A true look at our society and why there needs to be a change in our relationship to one another. Growing up in America a straightforward look at American history and how it has shaped our relationship to God as the oppressed and therefore the blessed.
I love the uniqueness of the ideas presented here and the conviction by which Cone explains them. Though it is a heavy read, it is necessary to explain concepts that are new territory for the typical reader. This book is definitely for the patient and those with a heavy desire to better understand Blackness and how it should relate to religion.
I was in seminary and had to take a break from it for many of the reasons that Cone identifies. Must read!
He writes from the heart. He makes us think about our Christianity.
It's a classic and a great read!
Book is very insightful and still relevant to an extent. Regret that it took so long for one of them to be delivered.
