Sara (mother and grandmother), Maria (daughter and mother) and Alex (grandson and son) collaborated on a closet. Maira and Alex recreated Sara's superbly organized closet, and Alex installed the results in an alley in Lower Manhattan. Later it moved to the Met. Now it's at the Skirball Center in L.A.This book, complete with fantastic images, explores this meticulously designed closet, and communicates the results with real joy, creating a deep sense of joy in this reader.One gets a real sense of Sara's life from the short descriptions, drawings and memories gathered around the objects in this small space.A treasure.Robert C. I confess, I read this whole book in the bookstore today. It is an uplifting and inspiring story filled with wisdom. I enjoyed it a lot. Sara was a unique and artistic woman, and she dealt with adversity with aplomb. The illustrations and well-chosen photos from Sara’s life round out the experience of reading this book. Ms. Berman ultimately created a life of relative simplicity and order, wrote letters, had a special cookie recipe she made (included in the back of the book), loved her family and embraced New York. I’m recommending this book to people I know because Sara seems interesting, upbeat and fun, and her story is compelling.

This is the story of a life that begins with the birth of a girl three generations ago in Eastern Europe. In some ways the story is not that unusual, yet the woman who lived it truly was. Her story is told by her accomplished daughter and grandson (Maira & Alex Kalman) in a remarkable little book that explodes with color, light, and life.In this account of Sara Berman’s life you will learn of Sara’s closet; more curated than filled, along with what happened to that closet, and why it is traveling around the world. But more than that, you will meet a woman who would not let go of her independence or the child within.The physical properties of the book reflect that spirt. It is a stunning piece of art in its own right (not surprising given artists daughter and grandson who created it). This is a very short book, magnificently printed, with imagery, photos, drawings and paintings that beautifully mix an adult world with the wonderful naivete of a child. You will read this quickly (40 minutes?) but you will long remember it because it is likely to, in some small way, change the way you see yourself and the world around you. And who knows, you may even decide it is time to rethink your closet.Highly recommended and a great gift.Notes: I encourage you to learn more about Sara's daughter, artist Maira Kalman, coauthor of this book. Photo above is of me inspired to where white as Sara Berman did, holding the book and cookies I made from a recipe that plays a role in the story. (One negative, fantastic read, but don't bother making the cookies.)

Great Book. Maira Kalman has a style all of her own. It's like it's own genre of a book with hand writing, old photos and great art work by the author. Great history of the infamous individual, Sara Berman. The important message to me in this book is...we never know who we are looking at or what their personal history might be. It's fascinating. Makes a lovely gift for someone who likes, personal stories, art and color.
